UNIFORMS
Here you will find information about uniforms including what uniform your dancer requires and where/how to purchase. Uniform is not required until your child commits to lessons. Active wear and bare feet will be suitable for the first few lessons.
See below for a what is required for each genre/level. We have a Private Facebook Group which allows you to sell/purchase second hand uniform (independent from JMSD).
Dance Sock Academy Socks
Optional but recommended. Dance Socks are designed to help learn and practice the very important base technique. Socks will be used in lessons and are very useful to continue practice at home. They have 10 visual features used to ensure placement/ alignment is correct. There will be a supply available in studio to use to in lessons but we do recommended to purchase your own pair for practice at home, or if a dancer wishes to have their own pair in lessons. Socks are required for: Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary all levels (not required for Hip Hop) Purchased online from dancesock.co.nz.
How to purchase uniforms
JMSD Boutique
We’re excited to announce the opening of our new dance shoe and uniform shop, now conveniently located at Studio 1, 130 King Street and open to all dancers, saving families the trip to Christchurch. We stock MDM Dance shoes, renowned for their quality and superior support, including canvas ballet flats in sizes from 2 years to adult with matching coloured tights available, as well as black jazz shoes and contemporary half shoes. Opening hours may vary as the shop continues to grow; for now, we are open during term time on selected days, with 2026 hours announced via our social media.
Payment is accepted via internet banking or cash (EFTPOS not available at this stage).
Uniform Requirements - Ballet
Ballet Shoes
Pre-School up to Grade 2 wear unblocked ballet slippers with elastic across the instep. Strictly no ribbons for junior grades. Grade 3 and above, ribbons may be attached. We will send you an email when it is time for this.
Where do I purchase ballet shoes?
Ballet shoes can be purchased from JMSD Boutique. We highly recommend getting all dance shoes fitted in-store, especially if it’s your first pair.
Pointe Shoes
Your teacher will send full information when it is time to purchase pointe shoes. It is important you wait until the teacher has given permission as beginning pointe work too early is very dangerous. We require all students who have been given permission to pass a ‘pre-pointe assessment’ with a dance podiatrist to ensure their safety.
Socks/tights
Ballet tights are recommended. ‘Convertible’ tights are recommended for Grade Two and above. Socks may be worn in warmer weather. Find links below. Limited supply available in studio for purchase.

Presentation

For Ballet and Jazz all hair is to be worn neatly off the face in a bun or French plait (no pony tails as loose hair makes learning to turn/dance very difficult). For Hip Hop and Contemporary a tidy ponytail is allowed. Strictly no jewellery to be worn.
Hoodies/Jackets
Hoodies & Jackets ordered via JMSD (jmsd.orders@gmail.com). (Min 8 orders). Hoodies are not to be worn for class. Teachers need to clearly see body lines. Warm Up clothing may be worn for the first 10 minutes of class only.
Hoodies & School Jackets are available for all genres.
Hip Hop Uniform (All Ages)

For Hip Hop classes, students may wear bare feet, jazz, or ballet shoes.
While sneakers are typically worn for Hip Hop, we ask that students refrain from wearing them in class to protect our specialised dance flooring—especially in the White Studio—as certain soles can cause damage. For specific exercises (particularly in senior grades), students will be informed when sneakers are required. Sneakers will also be needed for recital performances, with details provided closer to the time.
